When Juliet is faced the decision of marrying Paris or disowning her family, she sees no other option then to seek Friar Lawrence’s help. He gives Juliet a vial that is supposed to put her to sleep for just enough time that her family will believe she is dead. Before she commits to drinking the potion, Juliet’s mind races as she thinks through all of the possible results. For this reason, “Someday” by The Strokes would be the perfect song to play as Juliet contemplates her next move. In the play, Juliet has three main fears; that “it be a poison which the Friar subtly hath ministered to have [her] dead”, she will “wake before the time that Romeo come to redeem [her]”, and what will happen “if this mixture do not work at all” (4.3.21-33). Similarly, in the song, the singer says, “and now my fears they come to me in threes”. Juliet also reminisces about her star-crossed lover before this act and remembers him as a “holy man” (4.3.30) and even refers to him as “my Romeo” (4.3.36). Likewise, “Someday” references reminiscing through the lines, “I’ll miss the good old days “and “When we was young, oh man did we have fun”. Lastly, the song and the play both discuss the connection between people in a relationship. The singer says, “I see alone we stand, together we fall apart” which can be connected to how Juliet was separated from Romeo (through his exile) but also how their death will bring them together in heaven. Therefore, “Someday” by The Strokes relates to Juliet’s fears and thoughts before consuming the potion from Friar Lawrence.
Lyrics:
In many ways I'll miss the good old days
Someday
Someday.
It hurts to say but I want you to stay
Sometimes
Sometimes
When we was young, oh man did we have fun
Always
Always
Promises they break before they're made
Sometimes
Sometimes
My ex says I'm lacking in depth
I will do my best
You say you want to stand by my side
Darling your heads not right
I see alone we stand, together we fall apart
Yeah I think ill be alright
I'm working so I won't have to try so hard
Tables they turn sometimes
Oh... someday
I ain't wasting no more time
Trying, trying
And now my fears they come to me in threes
So I
Sometimes
They fade, my friend, you say the strangest things
I find
Sometimes
Oh my ex says I'm lacking in depth
Still I will try my best
You say you want to stand by my side
Darling your heads not right
You see alone we stand together we fall apart
Yeah I think ill be alright
I'm working so I won't have to try so hard
Tables they turn sometimes
Oh someday
Still I ain't wasting no more time.
